If you are staying in Florence and would like to taste wine where it is made, poured by the family who makes it, the Chianti hills of Montespertoli are about half an hour away. Here is what to expect and how to organise the day, from the Bucci family, who have farmed here since 1965.
Why Montespertoli
Montespertoli is one of the Chianti areas closest to Florence and one of the subzones of Chianti DOCG. Its hills are covered with vineyards and olive groves and dotted with small family wineries rather than large estates, so you usually taste with the people who make the wine. Our guide to the wineries of Montespertoli explains the wines of the area.
What you taste at San Giusto
You taste every wine we make: white, rosé, red and Gran Rosso, finishing the Tuscan way with Vin Santo and homemade cantuccini, together with our honey with cheese and a board of cured meats. The Classic Tasting costs €25 per person; the Territory Tasting, at €30, adds a guided tasting of our extra virgin olive oil. Every tasting also includes a tour of the farm and a walk through the vineyards. It lasts about an hour, on our terrace among the vineyards, in English, Italian or Spanish, and you can ask us anything about how we make our wine.
Getting here from Florence
We are at Via Forcile 18, Montespertoli (FI), about 30 minutes by car from Florence and about 8 km from the village; parking at the farm is free. If you have no car, we can arrange transport for you: just ask when you send your booking request. Directions on Google Maps.
When to come
Tastings take place every day, by reservation, at the time that suits you. Spring and autumn are the most pleasant seasons among the vineyards; the grape harvest takes place between September and October, and in late May and early June the village celebrates the Mostra del Chianti wine festival.
Make a day of it
The tasting pairs well with a private cooking class: fresh pasta or pizza with our family, then lunch or dinner with two bottles of our wine (from €70 per person, €55 per child under 12). In autumn you can also join our olive harvest day: a day picking olives with the family, a visit to the olive mill and lunch at the farm. You can also stay in our farmhouse, with its infinity pool over the vineyards, or explore what to see in Montespertoli.
